Lycoris squamigera â Surprise Lily, also called Resurrection Lily or Naked Ladies â is one of the most magical bulbs in cultivation. In spring, lush strappy foliage emerges and grows vigorously â then disappears entirely. Weeks later, with no foliage in sight, tall elegant stems rise from bare ground and burst open into clusters of fragrant, rose-pink, funnel-shaped blooms in a spectacular late-summer surprise. One of the hardiest species in the Lycoris genus. Native to Japan and China. Sold as 1 bulb.
Plant Highlights
- Fragrant rose-pink, funnel-shaped blooms on tall bare stems â late summer to fall
- Foliage emerges in spring and dies back before flowers appear â truly a magical display
- One of the hardiest Lycoris species; reliable perennial in zones 5â10
- Naturalizes freely over time; plant in groups for a stunning drift effect
- Dislikes being transplanted â choose your site carefully for long-term performance
Planting & Care Guide
Planting: Plant bulbs 8â12 inches deep and space 6 inches apart. Choose a full sun to afternoon sun location with fertile, well-drained soil.
Water: Water moderately during active growth; sparingly during the summer dormancy period when foliage has died back.
Transplanting: Lycoris strongly dislikes being disturbed â avoid moving established clumps. Mulch well over winter in colder zones (5â6) to protect bulbs from deep freezes.
Siting: Plant where spring foliage can grow undisturbed, then die back naturally. Good companions: hostas or daylilies that fill in the gap after foliage fades.
