Thailand’s Upright-Fruiting Hot Pepper — Spectacular Container Plant, Serious Heat

Thai Sun is a visually stunning hot pepper from Thailand — compact plants produce heavy yields of small, ¾" × ½" fiery peppers that grow upright, facing the sky like tiny flames. The festive clusters of simultaneously red and green peppers make this an exceptional ornamental container pepper as well as a productive culinary variety. Fruits ripen from light green to vivid red in 90 days. Excellent for indoor year-round growing; ideal for apartment gardeners and balcony containers.

Highlights

  • Compact plant; heavy-yielding; upright fruit clusters
  • Fruits: ¾" × ½"; very hot; ripens green to red
  • Matures in 90 days; excellent for containers (5-gallon pots minimum)
  • Outstanding indoor/patio ornamental and culinary pepper
  • Variety from Thailand; green stems, leaves, white flowers

In the Kitchen

Use Thai Sun peppers in stir-fries, curries, dipping sauces, and fermented chili pastes. Harvest green for fresher, grassier heat or red for deeper, fruitier intensity. Dry the small fruits whole for a long-lasting pantry staple. Excellent in any recipe calling for bird’s eye chili.

Growing Guide

  • Start indoors: 8–10 weeks before last frost; sow ¼" deep in organic seed-starting mix
  • Germination: Warm soil essential — use a heat mat; peppers can take 1 week to 1 month
  • Transplant outdoors: 2–4 weeks after last frost when air temp reaches 70°F and soil is above 65°F
  • Containers: 5-gallon pots minimum; year-round growing indoors in cool climates
  • Soil: Fertile, well-drained; add compost at planting; mulch to retain moisture and warmth
  • Fertilize: Slow-release at transplanting; avoid excessive nitrogen
  • Harvest: With gloves; pick regularly to encourage continuous fruit set
