Fruity Habanero Flavor with Serious Heat

Red Habanero (Capsicum chinense) produces wrinkled, lantern-shaped peppers with a fruity aroma and intense heat. Fruits develop from green toward red as they ripen, bringing bold flavor to pepper sauces, salsas, and jerk-style marinades.

Grow a plant near your kitchen garden or in a sunny patio container, then harvest a few peppers to season a batch of homemade sauce. Start with a small amount: habanero heat can quickly dominate a dish.

What You Receive

  • Product: Live red habanero pepper plants for growing, not seeds or harvested peppers.
  • Pack options: Choose 1, 4, 10, or 25 plants.
  • Species: Capsicum chinense.
  • Fruit: Wrinkled, lantern-shaped peppers, approximately 2 inches long.
  • Mature color: Red.
  • Typical plant height: Approximately 24–36 inches, depending on growing conditions.
  • Heat: Very hot; habaneros are commonly described in the 100,000–350,000 SHU range. Actual heat varies, and individual fruits are not heat-tested.
  • Harvest timing: Approximately 90 days from transplant under favorable conditions; ripe harvest may take longer in cool weather.

Arrival Care

Unpack plants promptly and check moisture around the roots. Water gently if needed and keep plants in a bright, sheltered location while they recover from transit. Gradually introduce them to stronger sun and outdoor conditions before permanent planting. Plant size and maturity vary; flowers or fruit at arrival are not guaranteed.

Planting and Containers

Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed and weather is consistently warm. Choose full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Set plants at approximately their existing growing depth, firm the soil gently, and water to settle the roots.

For containers, use a pot with drainage holes and approximately 5 gallons or more of growing space per plant. Leave room for mature growth and add support if branches become heavy with fruit.

Ongoing Care

  • Keep soil evenly moist without leaving roots waterlogged.
  • Check containers frequently during hot or windy weather.
  • Use a vegetable fertilizer according to its label; avoid excessive nitrogen that encourages leaves at the expense of fruit.
  • Apply mulch around plants without piling it against the stems.
  • Protect from frost. Habaneros are frost-tender and are commonly grown as warm-season annuals in colder climates.

Warmth, sunlight, plant establishment, and season length influence flowering and fruit production. Yield and harvest dates are not guaranteed.

Harvest and Kitchen Use

Harvest when peppers reach the color and ripeness you prefer; allow them to turn red for mature flavor. Use clean snips to avoid tearing branches. Add small amounts to sauces and marinades, taste cautiously, and increase gradually.

Hot Pepper Handling

Wear gloves when cutting or handling peppers. Avoid touching eyes and face, wash hands and tools thoroughly, and provide good ventilation when cooking or blending hot peppers. Keep fruit and prepared hot sauces away from children and pets. For shelf-stable sauces or pickles, use a tested preservation recipe rather than improvising acidity or processing times.
