Cleome flowers, also known as spider flowers, may be disregarded as annuals due to their unremarkable appearance as young seedlings. Unlike marigolds and impatiens, which are commonly favored, cleomes usually do not bloom until they have firmly settled in the garden. While they can be sown in early spring, many experienced gardeners prefer to plant cleome seeds directly into the soil in late fall.
| Common Name | Cleomes, spider flower, Rocky Mountain bee plant, stinking clover |
Light: Cleome flowers thrive in sunny conditions and may become top-heavy if grown in shade. Transplants produce blooms from early summer until the first frost, while starting from seed yields the first flowers in mid- to late-June, depending on the climate.
Soil: Cleome flowers thrive in typical garden soil or nutrient-dense, well-drained loam.
Water: As a drought-tolerant plant, Cleome is a valuable addition to any xeriscape garden once it has established itself. By adding a three-inch layer of organic mulch to its planting bed, you can further reduce its water requirements.
