Okra is a versatile vegetable, known for its starring role in gumbo and as a fried option. It is also used in pickled or stir-fried dishes and can be grown in hot climates.
.Okra is common in curries, stir-fries, and soups, a key component in Indian dishes like bhindi masala and sambar. It's also found in Filipino soups like sinigang, with its mucilage used to thicken sauces and stews.
Preserve or cook okra in various ways - freezing, pickling, canning, marinating, and serving with other vegetables. It has a mild, eggplant-like flavor and can be stored frozen for up to 12 months.
Hill Country Okra, also referred to as Bhindi or Gumbo, is a species of Abelmoschus Esculentus that originates from South Texas. These plants reach a height of 6 feet and feature stunning red stems. This variety also makes for an excellent pickling option and can be harvested in just 60-70 days.
Planting Tips: A hot weather plant, start indoors 2-3 weeks before last frost date. Soak seeds overnight before planting. Transplant into the garden a month after last frost date. A heavy feeder, make sure to plant in fertile soil.
Once established Okra is very drought tolerant. However, watering every 7-10 will produce higher yields. However don't over water. Okra does like drier soils than most of your veggies.
Ovoid planting Okra in wet, soggy soils.
Okra will grow best in soil that has been worked down to a level of 10".
Thin plants to about a 12" apart.
Fertilize your bed with composted manure before hand, but do not feed too much nitrogen was established. This will cause luxuriant growth and few blooms/pods.
