Malawi Bird's Eye is one of Africa's most celebrated hot peppers — a Capsicum frutescens heirloom from southeastern Malawi, widely known across Africa as Peri Peri ("pepper pepper" in Swahili). Small, tapered pods ripen from green to fiery red on extremely bushy, prolific plants that grow to 120 cm and produce heavy yields of intensely hot chilis year-round. Heat levels can reach up to 200,000 SHU. Also known as African Bird's Eye and, in South America, as Malagueta pepper.

About Malawi Bird's Eye

The African Bird's Eye pepper differs distinctly from its longer Thai and Indian cousins — pods are shorter, tapered to a blunt point, and deliver a clean, intense heat with excellent aroma. This is the pepper behind authentic Peri Peri sauce, one of the most popular hot sauces in African and Portuguese cuisine. Exceptionally productive, easy to grow in containers, and well-suited to drying and grinding into chili powder or blending into sauces and vinegars.

Culinary Uses

  • Blend into authentic Peri Peri sauce and African hot sauces
  • Pickle whole in vinegar for a classic African and Portuguese condiment
  • Dry and grind into fiery chili powder or chili flakes
  • Add fresh to soups, stews, and grilled meats for intense African heat
  • Use in salsas, marinades, and vinegars for bold, clean fire

Wear gloves when handling. Wash hands thoroughly after removing gloves. Keep away from eyes and sensitive areas.

Growing Tips

  • Start indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost. Sow seeds 1/4" deep in warm, moist organic seed-starting mix.
  • Germination takes 1–4 weeks. Use a heat mat (80–85F) for best results.
  • Soak seeds in room-temperature water for up to 24 hours before planting to speed germination.
  • Avoid peat plugs and standard potting soil — organic seed-starting mix prevents damping off.
  • Harden off gradually before transplanting outdoors. Move outside once nighttime temps stay above 55F.
  • Container friendly — ideal in 5-gallon pots; bushy plants thrive in containers year-round in warm climates.

Care Requirements

  • Soil: Fertile, well-drained. Mulch around the base with straw or grass clippings.
  • Water: Consistent deep watering during dry spells; soaker hoses recommended.
  • Fertilizer: Slow-release at transplant; liquid feed every two weeks through the growing season.
  • Harvest: Cut with garden scissors when pods reach full red. Pick regularly to encourage the plant's prolific year-round fruiting.
