White Turmeric (Zedoary) Rhizome
Grow Curcuma zedoaria, an aromatic tropical plant in the ginger family. Also known as zedoary or white turmeric, it develops fragrant foliage and striking yellow flowers with red and green bracts. Its rhizome is used as a spice and has a distinctive aroma.
Growing Instructions
- Plant rhizomes in warm conditions in fertile, well-drained soil.
- Choose a bright location with sun or partial shade, and shelter plants from strong winds and cold.
- Keep the soil evenly moist during active growth, but avoid waterlogging.
- Grow in a container if you need to move the plant to a warmer, protected spot when temperatures cool.
- Foliage may die back during a cooler-season dormancy. Allow time for the plant to establish, as rhizomes can take about two years to mature.
Harvesting
Allow the plant time to mature before harvesting rhizomes. Carefully lift and separate the rhizome, keeping any healthy pieces intended for replanting. Handle gently and store in a cool, dry place.
