Starting From Seed
Start indoors approximately 8–10 weeks before your last expected frost. Sow 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix and maintain a soil temperature of approximately 80–85°F. Keep the mix lightly moist, not saturated. Germination typically takes 1–3 weeks under suitable conditions.
Provide bright light after seedlings emerge. Harden plants off gradually before moving them outdoors after frost danger has passed and both soil and weather are reliably warm.
Growing and Care
- Light: Choose a full-sun location.
- Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost; a pH of approximately 6.0–6.8 is suitable.
- Water: Water consistently, allowing the surface to begin drying between waterings. Avoid waterlogged roots.
- Containers: Use a pot with drainage holes; a 3–5 gallon container is a practical starting size.
Harvest and Kitchen Use
Harvest green or allow peppers to ripen fully red, depending on your recipe. Snip fruits from the plant rather than pulling them. Use small amounts in curry pastes, stir-fries, dipping sauces, and other dishes, then adjust to taste. Chilies can also be dried or preserved using an appropriate recipe.
Safe Handling
Wear gloves when cutting or handling hot peppers, especially broken fruits. Avoid touching your eyes or other sensitive areas, and wash your hands and utensils thoroughly afterward. Keep hot peppers away from children and pets.
