White Emperor Tulip Bulbs – Fosteriana Heirloom | Early Spring Bloomer

White Emperor (Tulipa fosteriana ‘White Emperor’) is one of the most elegant and enduring heirloom tulips available — a pure white, large-flowered Fosteriana tulip with a distinctive creamy yellow base and heart that glows softly when lit from behind. Among the earliest tulips to bloom in spring, White Emperor produces enormous, high-drama flowers on strong, sturdy stems — among the most impressive for early spring garden impact.

White Emperor is one of the best tulips for perennializing, reliably returning year after year with minimal effort when planted in well-drained soil. It blooms in perfect synchrony with daffodils and pairs beautifully with Blue Grape Hyacinths for a stunning early-season blue-and-white combination. A natural companion to the legendary Red Emperor. Excellent for beds, borders, containers, low walls, and cutting gardens. Supplied as premium 12+ cm caliber bulbs for maximum first-year flowering performance.

Variety Details

  • Botanical Name: Tulipa fosteriana ‘White Emperor’
  • Type: Fosteriana Tulip — heirloom, open-pollinated
  • Flower color: Pure white with creamy yellow base and heart
  • Bloom time: Early spring — among the first tulips to flower
  • Bulb size: 12+ cm caliber — premium grade for strongest flowering
  • Deer resistant; naturalizes well (perennializing)
  • Excellent for: Beds, borders, containers, cutting gardens, mass plantings

Planting Guide

  • When to plant: Plant bulbs in autumn (fall) for flowers the following spring. Plant after the first cold nights but before the ground freezes — typically October through November in most climates.
  • Depth: Dig a hole 6 inches deep. Place the bulb pointy side up. If unsure of orientation, plant on its side — the shoot will find its way to the surface.
  • Spacing: Plant in informal groups of 5 or more bulbs for the most natural and full effect. Avoid single rows — clusters in rectangular, triangular, or oval patterns look fullest from all angles.
  • Soil: Well-draining soil is essential. Incorporate peat moss or compost if drainage is poor — tulip bulbs will rot in waterlogged conditions. Water only if soil is very dry at planting time.
  • Sun: Full sun to partial sun. Afternoon shade is tolerated.

Garden Design Tips

  • Plant in clusters of 5–15 bulbs per grouping for high impact. Scatter multiple clusters throughout a border for a naturalized look.
  • Combine with Blue Grape Hyacinths for a classic early-spring blue-and-white display.
  • Pair with Red Emperor tulips for a striking red-and-white contrast in the same bed.
  • Mass plant Darwin Hybrid Tulips alongside for extended bloom from early through mid-spring.
  • Excellent as a cut flower — long-stemmed and long-lasting in the vase. Pick when buds are just opening for maximum vase life.
  • For cutting gardens, combine with fringed, lily-flowered, and parrot tulip varieties for a range of shapes and textures.
