Tulipa batalinii ‘Bright Gem’ is a captivating botanical (species) tulip discovered wild in Iran, with uniquely shaped blooms that open a soft creamy yellow and mature to a warm, burnished bronze — a rare and sophisticated color evolution in a single flower. A true perennial naturalizer: hardy, fragrant, deer resistant, and perfectly suited for rock gardens, borders, and naturalized meadow plantings. Height 4–6 inches. Top size 6/8 cm bulbs.

Plant Highlights

  • Creamy yellow blooms maturing to burnished bronze — a truly distinctive color progression
  • Wild origin from Iran — one of the great botanical species tulips
  • Fragrant; attracts bees and butterflies
  • Genuinely deer resistant
  • Long-lived perennial naturalizer — stays where planted and returns year after year
  • Low, graceful habit; weather-resilient; striped foliage on many specimens
  • Blooms mid-to-late spring (end April); height 4–6 inches; top size 6/8 cm

Planting Guide

When to plant: Fall, for spring bloom.

Location: Mostly sunny to light shade; excellent drainage essential. Avoid waterlogged sites.

Depth & spacing: Plant 6–7 inches deep (at least 2x bulb height), pointed end up. Space 5–6 inches apart in beds; cluster closer in containers for the best effect.

After planting: Water thoroughly to settle the soil. Botanical tulips are happy to remain in the ground year-round in suitable zones — no annual digging required.

Spring & Post-Bloom Care

Water lightly when there has been no rain for 3–5 days. After bloom, remove green seedpods and cut stems promptly. Do not remove foliage until fully yellow/purple — leaves return nutrients to the bulb. Stop watering after foliage is removed to allow the bulb to rest.
