Sweet Datil is one of Florida's rarest and most prized pepper varieties — a Capsicum chinense heirloom exclusive to St. Augustine that delivers all the fruity, tropical aroma of the legendary Datil pepper with virtually no heat. This rare sweet variant produces vivid red pods measuring 2" long × 3/4–1" wide with a rich, fruity flavor profile that makes it exceptional for sauces, fresh eating, and Caribbean-inspired cooking. Not easily found outside of St. Augustine — a true collector's variety.

About Sweet Datil

The standard Datil pepper is one of the hottest peppers in North America, grown almost exclusively in and around St. Augustine, Florida. The Sweet Datil is its rare, mild sibling — sharing the same distinctive fruity aroma and Caribbean character but without the fire. An outstanding choice for those who love bold pepper flavor without the burn, and a unique addition to any specialty pepper garden.

Culinary Uses

  • Blend into sweet pepper sauces and fruit-forward hot sauce bases
  • Use fresh in salsas, ceviche, and Caribbean dishes for fruity depth with no heat
  • Roast and puree into dips, spreads, and compound butters
  • Pickle whole for a striking, aromatic condiment
  • Pair with mango, pineapple, or citrus for tropical-style relishes

Care for Your Live Plant

  • Light: Place outside in a location with wind protection and partial sunlight. Gradually increase sun exposure over 1–2 weeks.
  • Temperature: Bring indoors if night temperatures drop below 55F. Grows year-round in containers in warm climates.
  • Container: 5-gallon pots recommended to avoid root crowding.
  • Soil: Fertile, well-drained. Mulch around the base with straw or grass clippings.
  • Water: Deep, consistent watering during dry and hot spells; soaker hoses work well.
  • Fertilizer: Slow-release at transplant; liquid feed every two weeks through the growing season.
  • Harvest: Pick peppers when fully red for peak sweetness and flavor. Harvest regularly to encourage continued production.
