Chia, a plant from the mint family, is known for its edible seeds and beautiful blooms. In order to showcase its stunning flowers, the plant requires warm temperatures. It is indigenous to Mexico and Central America and is a popular choice for attracting pollinators to gardens.

Chia Germination: To begin the sprouting process, carefully arrange the chia seeds in a tray and lightly water them. Place a cover over the tray and maintain a temperature of 75-85 degrees F for approximately four days or until the seeds reach a height of 1/2", which is ideal for consumption. For outdoor planting, it is recommended to start the seeds 4-6 weeks before the last spring frost, sowing them directly onto the soil surface and ensuring the flat is kept warm and slightly moist.

Growing : When planting Chia Plant Seeds, make sure to space the seedlings 12-15" apart in well-drained soil and full sun after the last frost. Chia plants thrive in dry soil and only require watering in the case of prolonged drought.

Harvesting: Harvest the leaves of the chia plant when it reaches 6 inches in height. The leaves can also be dried and used for tea. With ample warmth and a lengthy growing season, the chia plant will produce seed heads that can be dried and have their seeds removed. However, given the chia's susceptibility to mold and disease, it is important to only consume tested chia seeds to avoid potential risks.
