Family
Alliaceae
Genus
Allium are bulbous herbaceous perennials with a strong onion or garlic scent, linear, strap-shaped or cylindrical basal leaves and star-shaped or bell-shaped flowers in an umbel on a leafless stem. It's graceful habit, deep pink color and long bloom time make it a very useful plant for front to mid border during an "in between time" when there is not much else coloring your perennial beds and borders.
Reaching a height of 18" - 26", Allium pulchellum will gently self sow itself into nice little drift, and seedlings reach flowering size in just about a year or two.
Details
Keeled Garlicis a vigorous bulbous perennial forming a clump of linear leaves, with stems to 45cm tall bearing loose umbels 5cm wide, of bell-shaped white flowers in summer.
How To Grow :
For container grown plants, sow flowered keeled garlic seeds in soil that is very porous. A recommended soil mixture is 1 part perlite, 1 part peat moss, and 1 part potting soil. If growing the plants outdoors, amend the soil with organic matter so that it drains well. The flowered keeled garlic plants will rot if the soil retains water. Sow the Garlic herb seeds on the soil and lightly cover with 1/8 inch of soil and keep the flower seeds moist until germination.
SOWING ADVICE: SOW SEEDS AT ANY TIME COVERING THEM WITH COMPOST OR GRIT 5MM DEEP, KEEPING THE SEED POT IN A COOL, WELL-LIT SPOT OUTDOORS. ARTIFICIAL HEAT IS NOT NEEDED AND PREVENT GERMINATION SO BE VERY PATIENT AS MANY SPECIES WILL ONLY GERMINATE IN THE SPRING AFTER CHILLING OR FREEZING IN THE MOIST SEED TRAY IN THE WINTER. GROW ON INDIVIDUAL SEEDLINGS IN SMALL POTS UNTIL OF SUFFICIENT SIZE TO BE POTTED ON OR PLANTED OUT INTO THE OPEN GROUND.
