Allium 'Hair' is one of the most eye-catching ornamental onions you can grow — its globe-shaped blooms are crowned with a wild spray of green filaments, mimicking the look of papyrus or a shock of wild hair. Also known as Wild Garlic, this conversation-stopping variety adds unmatched textural drama to late spring borders, cottage gardens, and cut flower arrangements.

Plant Highlights:

  • Height: approximately 20 inches
  • Bulb size: 5/+ cm
  • Bloom time: late spring to early summer (June)
  • Attracts bees and butterflies
  • Deer, rabbit, and rodent resistant
  • Excellent naturalizer — returns reliably year after year
  • Ideal for perennial borders, cottage gardens, and cut flower use

When to Plant:
Plant allium bulbs in fall for late spring to early summer bloom. Allium 'Hair' performs best when planted before the ground freezes, typically September through November depending on your zone.

Where to Plant:
Choose a site with full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Once established, Allium 'Hair' is low-maintenance and will naturalize over time, spreading slowly to fill in borders with minimal effort.

How to Plant:
Plant bulbs pointy-end up at a depth of roughly 2× the bulb's height, spaced 5–6 inches apart. Amend planting beds with bulb fertilizer at the time of planting for best establishment. Water well after planting. Alliums are adaptable and can also be grown successfully in large containers indoors.

How to Care for Your Bulbs:
Deadhead spent blooms before seeds disperse to prevent excessive self-seeding. Congested clumps can be lifted and divided right after flowering. Foliage will die back naturally — allow it to yellow before removing so the bulb can recharge for next year.

Sun Requirements: Full Sun to Partial Sun | Hardiness: Most temperate climates | Bulb Size: 5/+ cm
