Watermelon Seeds - Giant Red - Congo

Gowing: If you live in a cool climate, it is recommended to start Congo watermelon seeds indoors at least one month before transplanting. Sow three seeds in each peat pot, 1/4" deep, and maintain a soil temperature of 80-85 degrees F for optimal growth. Once true leaves appear, keep the strongest seedling and discard the others. After the last frost, transplant the seedlings and space them 6-8' apart in all directions. In warm climates, watermelon seeds can be directly sown into the ground once the soil reaches 75 degrees F, planting six seeds per hill with 6-8' of space in all directions. Once the seedlings emerge, thin them to the two or three strongest plants. It is recommended to plant watermelons in full sun and in nutrient-rich, loose soil. For best results, consider using black plastic to warm up the soil for young seedlings.

Growing: 

To ensure optimal growth, use a generous amount of mulch and monitor soil moisture levels when the fruit first appears. Insect pests should also be monitored, although Congo melons are known to resist anthracnose.

Harvesting:Various techniques are used by gardeners to determine the ripeness of their watermelons. Knowledge of the typical size of the melon is helpful in this process. One test involves knocking on the watermelon and listening for a dull thump instead of a hollow ring. Additionally, checking the underside of the melon where it touches the ground can reveal a rich yellow skin. Another indicator of ripeness is the tendril closest to the stem, which may begin to turn brown. When stored in a cool location, Congo watermelons can typically last for several weeks.
