Asarina antirrhiniflora — Climbing or Twining Snapdragon — is a quick-growing, half-hardy perennial vine producing a profusion of dainty 1-inch snapdragon-style flowers in a captivating mix of red, white, violet, and blue with speckled creamy lips. Soft pale green foliage provides an elegant backdrop for the delicate blooms. Vines twine readily around trellises, netting, and strings, and also cascade beautifully from hanging baskets and containers. Blooms from early summer through late winter where protected from frost. Reaches 4–6 feet (120–180 cm). Hardy in Zones 9–11; grown as an annual elsewhere. Ideal for patios, conservatories, walls, fences, and exotic gardens.

  • Also excellent in hanging baskets, containers, and as groundcover
  • Blooms early summer through late winter in frost-protected areas
  • Hardy Zones 9–11; grown as annual in cooler climates

Growing Guide

Starting indoors: Sow February through mid-April in good seed compost. Cover seeds with a very thin layer of compost or vermiculite. Seal tray in a polythene bag after sowing — do not exclude light; light aids germination. Germination at 65–70°F (18–20°C); 14–21 days.

Transplanting: When seedlings are large enough to handle, pot into 3-inch pots and grow on in cooler conditions. Gradually harden off before planting outdoors in late spring after all frost risk has passed. Space 12 inches apart in a sheltered spot with ordinary, cool, moist yet well-drained soil.

Support: Provide a trellis, strings, or netting for vines to climb. For containers and conservatories, final pot size 7–8 inches; maintain minimum winter temperature of 41–45°F (5–7°C).

Site and soil: Full sun to partial shade; rich, well-drained soil, pH 6.0–7.0. On acid soils, a light dusting of lime before planting is beneficial. Flowers appear approximately 3 months after starting from seed.
