Nigella damascena 'Jewels Mix' — Love-in-a-Mist, also known as Devil-in-a-Bush — is one of the most enchanting and unusual annuals you can grow from seed. Lacy, fern-like foliage gives the plant an airy, ethereal quality, while blooms in shades of red, white, and blue reach up to 2½ inches across. Once the flowers fade, equally ornamental, balloon-like seed pods form — stunning in dried arrangements. A ready self-seeder that returns year after year in mild climates. Approx. 14,000 seeds per oz.
Plant Highlights
- Jewel-toned blooms up to 2½ inches across — red, white, and blue mixed
- Lacy, fern-like foliage with a romantic, airy cottage garden character
- Ornamental seed pods that dry beautifully for use in arrangements
- Ready self-seeder; blooms continuously in mild climates
- Both cut flowers and dried pods are prized by floral designers
Growing Guide
Sowing outdoors: Direct-sow in early spring. Lightly cover seeds with a thin layer of soil. Succession-sow every 3 weeks for continuous blooms throughout the season — each plant has a relatively short individual bloom period.
Thinning and spacing: Thin seedlings to 6 inches apart. Plants begin blooming in approximately 3 months from seed.
Deadheading vs. pods: Deadheading will prolong flowering but eliminate the attractive seed pods. For the best of both worlds, deadhead early-season blooms and leave late-season flowers to develop pods for drying and self-seeding.
Drying pods: Cut stems with pods and hang upside down in a cool, dry location until fully dried.
Site and soil: Full sun to partial shade; well-drained soil, pH 6.6–7.5.
