Dianthus barbatus 'Sweet William Mix' is a short-lived perennial wildflower most often grown as a biennial — and a garden classic admired for its dense, richly colored flower heads, sweet fragrance, and exceptional cold hardiness (Zones 3–9). Many modern cultivars bloom in the first year from seed when started early enough. In optimal conditions, Sweet William will self-seed each year, returning season after season as if it were a long-lived perennial. Deer resistant. Approx. 6,500 seeds per ¼ oz; approx. 26,250 seeds per oz.

Growing Guide
Sowing: Direct-sow in prepared garden soil after all frost danger has passed. For first-year bloom, start seeds early indoors. Germinates best at 60–70°F; avg. germ time 14–30 days. Sow 1/16 inch deep.
Site and soil: Full sun; deep, organically rich, well-drained soil, pH 6.0–7.2. Appreciates some light afternoon shade in hot summer climates. Performs best when not stressed by drought or poor drainage.
Ongoing care: Prompt deadheading of spent flowers — or shearing back large plantings — promotes perennial tendencies and encourages repeat bloom. Keep consistently watered for best performance.
