Growing Microgreens

Use a clean, shallow container with drainage and fresh growing medium. Sow evenly, cover lightly, and keep the medium moist without waterlogging. Provide suitable light and good airflow as seedlings develop. Harvest above the medium with clean scissors when the greens reach your preferred size, often as the first true leaves begin to appear.

Indoor growing can be done year-round when suitable light, temperature, and hygiene are maintained.

Growing Garden Roots

Choose a cool-season planting window and loose, well-drained soil with enough depth for elongated roots. Sow outdoors, thin crowded seedlings, and maintain even moisture. Full-size roots require substantially longer than microgreens; check their development rather than using the microgreen harvest window.

Kitchen Uses

Use appropriately grown young greens to add peppery flavor to salads, sandwiches, and garnishes. Harvested roots can be sliced for salads or prepared in cooked dishes. Wash produce before preparation.

Sprouting and Food Safety

Before growing edible sprouts or microgreens, confirm that your seed lot is untreated and intended for that use. Warm, moist sprouting conditions can support harmful bacteria, and rinsing alone does not make sprouts safe. Use clean equipment and follow reliable food-safety guidance. People at higher risk of foodborne illness should avoid raw sprouts.
