Manchurian Pipevine Aristolochia manshuriensis - Chinese pipevine

Aristolochia manshuriensis — Manchurian Pipevine or Chinese Pipevine — is a deciduous, woody, twining climber native to mixed forests of Korea, eastern Siberia, and northeastern China (Manchuria). The East Asian counterpart of the American Dutchman’s Pipe, it produces enormous orbicular leaves (up to 11” × 11”) that make it one of the most impressive climbers for covering pergolas, arches, and gateways. The unusual pipe-shaped flowers — creamy white densely mottled with yellow-green and a contrasting 3-lobed bronze-red tip — bloom in June–July singly or in pairs from leaf axils. Each flower acts as a temporary insect trap, luring flies inside with a potent fragrance to dust them with pollen before releasing them. Cylindrical seed capsules to 4 inches long follow. Grows 15–20 feet long (up to 8 feet in a single season). Hardy Zones 5–9.

Germination Guide

Scarification: Soak seeds in water for 24 hours before stratification.

Stratification: Cold stratify seeds for 90 days (in moist sand or paper towel in the refrigerator at ~4°C / 39°F).

Sowing: After stratification, sow 1/4 inch deep; tamp the soil firmly; mulch the seed bed. Fall sowing in mulched beds outdoors is preferred over artificial stratification — seeds overwinter naturally and germinate in spring.
