This Asclepias physocarpa plant has bamboo-like foliage and white flowers with lavender centers that transform into decorative seed pods. It is a sturdy and attractive addition to flower beds and is ideal for large or dried arrangements. It is a perennial in Zones 9-11 and also goes by the names hairy balls, swan plant, swan milkweed, and balloon plant.
Product Description: Balloon Plant Milkweed (Asclepias physocarpa) is a tender perennial native to the US. Commonly known as Pleurisy Root, Orange Milkweed, or Butterfly Milkweed, this plant blooms in the summer and can reach heights of 24-36 inches with a spacing of 15-18 inches. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers medium to dry soil moisture. Suitable for USDA Zones 3-10, each ounce of seeds yields 5,000 plants, consisting of bushy, neatly arranged dark green foliage and clusters of vibrant orange flowers.
Growing Butterfly Weed Seeds: Young plants should be watered until they become established; mature plants can tolerate drought, and the roots will be damaged by excessively wet soil. Butterfly Weed grows slowly, and this plant may take 2-3 years to produce flowers. Though not invasive, this plant will eventually spread if left to drop its seed. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Deer avoid this plant. If aphids become a problem, dislodge them from the plant with a strong stream of water.
Harvesting Butterfly Weed: This makes a striking cut flower. Because the stems contain no milky sap, these flowers tend to have a longer vase life than most milkweed varieties. Cut the stems long, choosing flowers that have just opened.
