Plant Details

• Botanical name: Thymus serpyllum
• Variety: Magic Carpet
• Growth habit: Low and spreading
• Flower color: Pink
• Light: Full sun
• Best uses: Rock gardens, edging, containers, and groundcover plantings

Starting the Seeds

Sow on the surface of a moist, well-drained seed-starting mix or finely prepared outdoor seedbed. Press the tiny seeds gently into place without burying them deeply, because light can support germination. Keep the surface evenly moist without waterlogging and provide airflow.

Transplanting and Care

When seedlings are large enough to handle, move them into individual containers or thin outdoor seedlings to provide growing room. Harden indoor-grown plants gradually before transplanting after severe frost danger has passed. Choose lean to moderately fertile, well-drained soil and avoid locations that remain wet.

Water regularly during establishment. Once plants are rooted and spreading, adjust watering to weather and soil conditions. Trim after flowering or when needed to keep growth compact and tidy.

Using as Groundcover

Plant in groups for a fuller effect along paths, at border fronts, or among stones. Creeping thyme can tolerate occasional light contact once established, but it is not a replacement for turf in heavily traveled areas. Spread, flowering time, and winter survival vary with climate and care.

Choose a package of 1,000 seeds, 1/4 ounce, or 1 ounce.
