Citrus-Scented Basil Loved Across Southeast Asian & Garden Kitchens
Lemon Basil (Ocimum basilicum citriodorum) is the go-to herb for Southeast Asian cuisine — a compact, bushy annual with a delicate, clean lemon scent and flavor that elevates fish, poultry, rice dishes, herb vinegars, and sweet drinks. In Asia, the seeds are even used in refreshing desserts and beverages. Easy to grow from seed, beautiful in the garden, and endlessly versatile in the kitchen.
Why Grow Lemon Basil?
- Delicate Citrus-Lemon Flavor: A Southeast Asian culinary staple — lighter and more lemony than Italian basil, with a clean fragrance that enhances fish, poultry, salads, vinegars, and fruit-based desserts.
- Compact, Beautiful Plant: Grows 26 inches tall and 10–14 inches wide with light green pointed leaves — an ornamental herb that looks as good as it tastes.
- Natural Pest Repellent: A proven companion plant that deters aphids, mites, and tomato hornworms when planted near peppers, tomatoes, and vegetables.
- Available in 6 Sizes: From a 200-seed starter pack to a full 1 lb bulk bag — perfect for home gardeners and market growers alike.
- Open-Pollinated & Untreated: Warm season annual, USDA Zones 4–9. Maturity approximately 80 days.
Growing Guide
Sow outdoors after all frost danger has passed, or start indoors 4–8 weeks before the last frost. Grow in full sun with rich, well-drained soil. Pinch the center shoot after 6 weeks to encourage bushy growth and delay flowering. Remove flower stalks as they appear to keep leaves at peak flavor and freshness. Germination: 5–14 days at 60°F.
