An Ancient Herb Steeped in History — Medicinal, Culinary & Ornamental

Rue (Ruta graveolens), historically called “Herb of Grace,” is one of the oldest cultivated herbs in human history — prized in medieval times as a protective and medicinal plant, and today valued for its striking feathery blue-green foliage, bright yellow summer flowers, and unique bitter flavor that complements meats, cheeses, and pickled foods. Organic, heirloom, and Non-GMO.

Why Grow Rue?

  • Unique Ornamental Foliage: Feathery, deeply lobed, blue-green leaves and cheerful yellow midsummer blooms make Rue a beautiful architectural addition to herb gardens, borders, and knot gardens.
  • Medicinal Uses: Traditionally used as an antispasmodic to ease intestinal cramps, with documented anti-parasitic properties in herbal medicine.
  • Culinary Uses: Fresh leaves add a distinctive bitter, aromatic note to meats, cheese, eggs, and pickling recipes — especially popular in Italian and Ethiopian cuisines.
  • Natural Pest Deterrent: Repels insects and deer — a smart companion plant in the vegetable and herb garden.
  • Self-Seeding Perennial: Readily self-seeds for new plants each year. Deadhead spent flowers to control spread if desired.

Growing Guide

Sow seeds directly outdoors when soil temperature is at least 65°F. Surface sow — do not bury seeds. Germination can be erratic (7–14 days) — keep seeds consistently moist and be patient. Plant in full sun in poor, sandy, well-drained soil. Water regularly until established; drought-resistant once mature. Wear gloves when pruning as plant oils can irritate sensitive skin. USDA Zones 5–11. Height: 18–24 inches.
