This vine plant is known for its long, curved fruits resembling snakes hanging from supports or ground. It thrives in warm, subtropical climates and produces an abundance of fruits for extended periods. For best results, grow it alongside supports to ensure straight, young fruits. Similar to Luffa, the young fruits are harvested and cooked. However, please note that the seed has a hard coat and may take longer to germinate. Culinary tips: Use in curries. The shoots, tendrils and leaves can also be eaten as greens.
Cultivation: Requires a long, warm growing season. Prepare fertile, well drained soil. Sow seeds in spring/early summer after last frost in a warm, sunny location. The seed coat is hard and should be soaked in warm water for 24 hours or lightly scarified before sowing. Hill planting: Form soil into a 1-ft. diameter mound 3-4' tall. Space mounds 4-6' apart. Train to climb a vertical support for better air circulation, straighter fruit and ease of harvest. Snake gourd flowers during daylight hours.
