Black tomatoes, known as kumato tomatoes, are a Spanish heirloom that delivers a deliciously complex flavor of succulent sweetness with a slight tartness. Despite its unique appearance, do not be discouraged by the black tomato as it has great potential to prevent many diseases. This variety of tomato was born in Almeria, a Spanish city in the Mediterranean, in the 1970s.
When to start inside: Recommended to plant 6-8 weeks before the last frost. To harvest, wait until tomatoes are fully colored and firm. Approximately 1 month before the first fall frost, trim all blossoms and small fruit off the plant. This will allow the remaining energy to focus on ripening what is left. If there are many underripe tomatoes at the end of the season and a frost is approaching, pick them and store indoors, out of direct sunlight, in a single layer to ripen.
When to sow outside: For optimal growth, it is recommended to plant these tomato seeds only in mild winter climates. Sow them 1 to 2 weeks before the average last frost and when the soil temperature has reached at least 60°F.
