Henna Plant Seeds — Grow Your Own Natural Dye Shrub
Henna (Lawsonia inermis) is one of the world's oldest natural dyes, with a history stretching back to ancient Egypt. Prized across cultures for its rich reddish-brown pigment, henna is used to color hair, skin, and fabrics — and is celebrated worldwide for its role in intricate temporary body art, wedding traditions, and cultural ceremonies.
Beyond its dyeing properties, henna is a fragrant, flowering tropical shrub that makes a beautiful and purposeful addition to any warm-climate garden or sunny indoor space.

About Henna Dye
The dye is released when lawsone molecules are activated from crushed henna leaves. Freshly applied henna stains the skin orange, deepening to a rich reddish-brown over 2–3 days before gradually fading as skin cells shed. Henna is widely used in Indian, Middle Eastern, and North African cultures — from bridal ceremonies to beard dyeing — and is a staple at festivals and bohemian markets worldwide.
Growing Guide
Henna is a tropical plant that thrives in heat. Keep temperatures above 70°F year-round. Seeds can be slow to germinate — sometimes taking several weeks to months — so patience and warmth are key.
Germination tip: Cold stratification can improve germination rates. Place seeds on a moist paper towel, seal in an airtight bag, and refrigerate for several days. Then sow seeds in warm, well-draining soil (a cactus mix works well), barely covering them. Maintain warmth and provide bright light until sprouts emerge.
Seedlings can be transplanted outdoors at around 5 months. Amend soil with plenty of organic matter. Once established, henna plants are drought-tolerant and low-maintenance.
