Elevate your shade garden with the stunning Helleborus foetidus 'Wester Flisk', a distinguished cultivar of the Stinking Hellebore! This exceptional selection is prized for its dramatic contrast between dark evergreen foliage and vibrant red stems that provide year-round visual interest. The Wester Flisk Group represents some of the finest forms of this species, offering superior color and architectural presence in the winter garden.

Key Features:

  • Striking vibrant red stems create stunning winter color
  • Dark evergreen, deeply divided foliage
  • Clusters of pale green, bell-shaped flowers in late winter to early spring
  • Architectural form reaching 18-24 inches tall and wide
  • Evergreen structure provides year-round interest
  • Self-sows readily for naturalized plantings
  • Deer and rabbit resistant
  • Hardy in USDA zones 6-9

Growing Instructions:

Helleborus foetidus seeds benefit from cold stratification. Sow seeds in fall outdoors for natural stratification, or refrigerate for 4-6 weeks before spring sowing. Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in well-draining, alkaline to neutral soil enriched with organic matter. Germination can be slow and irregular, taking 1-6 months. Prefers partial shade to full shade and tolerates dry conditions once established. Space plants 18-24 inches apart. Note that seed-grown plants may show variation in stem color intensity.

Garden Uses:

Perfect for woodland gardens, shaded borders, winter interest plantings, and naturalized settings. The red stems are particularly striking against snow or dark mulch. Pairs beautifully with snowdrops, early bulbs, ferns, and other shade perennials. Excellent for dry shade under trees where few other plants thrive.

Note: Despite the common name "Stinking Hellebore," the scent is mild and only noticeable when foliage is crushed. All parts of hellebores are toxic if ingested.
