Sowing and growing

Start indoors about 10–12 weeks before the last expected frost. Sow 1/4 inch deep in a seed-starting mix and keep evenly moist without waterlogging. Aim for a soil temperature of 80–85°F (27–29°C); a seedling heat mat can help maintain warmth. Germination may take 2–4 weeks and sometimes longer.

Harden seedlings off gradually and transplant after frost danger has passed, when nights remain above 55°F (13°C). Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Space plants approximately 20–25 inches apart. For containers, use a well-drained pot of at least 5 gallons. Water consistently and mulch to help retain moisture.

Harvest and uses

Allow pods to ripen to yellow, then snip them from the plant with garden scissors. Use sparingly in hot sauces, marinades, or spicy dishes, adding small amounts gradually to suit your heat tolerance. This listing is for seeds to grow peppers, not fresh pods.

Handle with care

Wear gloves when handling harvested peppers or working with cut pods. Avoid touching your face or eyes, and wash hands, utensils, and work surfaces thoroughly afterward. Keep hot peppers away from children and pets.
