Key Features:

  • Compact cushion-forming alpine perennial
  • Distinctive deeply furrowed, textured foliage
  • Delicate white star-shaped flowers in spring
  • Reaches 2-4 inches tall, spreading 6-8 inches
  • Evergreen foliage provides year-round interest
  • Excellent for rock gardens and alpine troughs
  • Cold-hardy and drought-tolerant once established
  • Hardy in USDA zones 4-8

Growing Instructions:

Saxifraga exarata seeds benefit from cold stratification for best germination. Sow seeds in fall outdoors for natural stratification, or refrigerate for 3-4 weeks before spring sowing. Surface sow seeds on well-draining, gritty soil mix and press lightly without covering, as light aids germination. Keep consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination occurs in 2-6 weeks at 60-65°F. Prefers full sun to partial shade with excellent drainage. Space plants 6-8 inches apart. Thrives in lean, rocky, well-draining soils with added grit or sand. Avoid heavy, water-retentive soils.

Garden Uses:

Perfect for rock gardens, alpine gardens, scree beds, stone walls, crevice gardens, and troughs. Ideal for planting between paving stones or in vertical rock faces. Pairs beautifully with other alpine plants, sedums, sempervivums, and dwarf bulbs. Excellent choice for creating miniature alpine landscapes.
