Amsonia illustris — Ozark Bluestar or Shining Blue Star — is a native North American perennial prized for three-season interest: terminal clusters of light, star-shaped blue flowers in early-to-mid spring; shiny, willow-like foliage that stays attractive all summer; and a stunning display of golden yellow fall color that rivals ornamental grasses. Grows to 3 feet tall. Prefers moist, loamy soil but adapts well to medium to well-drained conditions. Hardy in USDA Zones 5–9. An outstanding low-maintenance native perennial for borders, naturalized plantings, and rain gardens.

Sowing Guide
Stratification (recommended for spring sowing): Mix seeds with moist sand and refrigerate for 60 days before planting. Direct sow stratified seeds after the last spring frost.
Fall sowing (no pre-treatment needed): Direct sow seed in fall with no stratification — seeds will remain dormant through winter and germinate naturally in spring.
Sowing depth: Do not cover seed — surface sow and press lightly. Light is required for germination.
Germination: 15–45 days at 75°F. Keep seeds consistently moist until germination. Thin or transplant seedlings to 12-inch spacing.
Care Guide
Plant in full sun to partial shade. Prefers moist, loamy soil but tolerates medium to well-drained conditions. In semi-shade or rich soil, some pruning or staking may be needed for a tidy, upright habit. Cut back by one-third after flowering to maintain compact shape and prevent sprawl.
