Growing Guide

Seed prep: Soak seeds overnight in warm water to soften the hard coat. If any remain hard after soaking, nick the seed coat lightly with a sharp knife before planting.

Cool-winter areas: Sow prepared seeds in fall for the earliest spring blooms.

Spring planting: Direct-sow as soon as the ground can be worked. Light frosts are tolerated, but seeds need at least 55°F to germinate. Plant ½ inch deep; keep moist.

Support: Provide a trellis, wire, netting, or strings before plants begin to grow — vines climb quickly after germination.

Starting indoors: Sow in groups of three in individual peat pots to avoid disturbing roots at transplant. Give ample sunlight. Pinch top leaves as seedlings develop to encourage branching.

Ongoing care: Water regularly; mulch to retain moisture. Fertilize several times through the season. Watch for slugs and birds on young plants.

Cutting: Cut early in the morning when the lowest blossom is just beginning to open. Strip lower leaves below the waterline and place in water immediately. The more you cut, the more they bloom.

Seed saving: Allow pods to turn light brown on the plant, then pick and spread to dry. Split pods, fully dry seeds, and store in a cool, dry place.
