Lobelia erinus var. pendula 'Trailing Sapphire' is a cascading lobelia producing abundant intense blue-purple flowers with a graceful, trailing habit โ€” a perfect choice for hanging baskets, window boxes, wall planters, and patio containers. Native to South Africa, Trailing Sapphire is a tender perennial grown as an annual in most climates (hardy in Zones 9โ€“10). Its continuous bloom habit and elegant cascading stems make it one of the most popular trailing flowering plants in cultivation.

Plant Highlights

  • Intense blue-purple flowers with graceful cascading stems to 12+ inches
  • Outstanding in hanging baskets, window boxes, and wall containers
  • Blooms continuously from planting until frost
  • Tender perennial (Zones 9โ€“10); grown as annual everywhere else
  • Tidy, compact growth at the crown with trailing stems below

Growing Guide

Starting indoors (recommended): Sow 10โ€“12 weeks before the last frost. Fill 2-inch pots or cell trays ยพ full with potting soil; mist to moisten. Sprinkle 3โ€“6 seeds per pot on the surface โ€” do not cover; seeds need light to germinate. Cover with plastic wrap and place under a grow light (avoid windows โ€” they fluctuate too much in temperature and light). Check daily; mist if soil dries out.

Germination to transplant: Once shoots are 2โ€“3 inches tall, remove plastic. Harden off over 2 weeks by increasing outdoor time and sun exposure gradually. Transplant after all frost danger has passed. Trailing lobelia excels in hanging pots.

Site and soil: Full sun to partial shade; well-drained, consistently moist soil. Do not allow to dry out completely. Regular watering and occasional feeding will keep plants vigorous all season.
