French Horticulture Cranberry Bean Seeds

French Horticulture beans produce attractive cream-colored beans marked with red speckles. Also known as French Horticultural, cranberry, or Borlotti beans, they are prized for their creamy texture and mild, nutty flavor. Harvest the pods young for fresh shelling beans, or let them dry for pantry storage.

Growing Instructions

  • Direct-sow outdoors after frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed.
  • Choose a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil.
  • Sow seeds about 1 inch deep, spacing plants 3โ€“6 inches apart. Space rows about 24โ€“30 inches apart.
  • Water after planting and keep the soil evenly moist while plants grow, avoiding waterlogged conditions.
  • Plants usually grow as bush beans, though some may produce runners. Leave room for growth and airflow.

Harvesting

  • For fresh shelling beans, pick pods when they are plump and the beans inside have developed.
  • For dry beans, leave pods on the plant until they are crisp and dry. If frost threatens before the pods finish drying, harvest them and finish drying indoors.
  • Shell fully dried pods and store the beans in a cool, dry place.

Kitchen Uses

Use cooked beans in soups, stews, salads, and other hearty dishes. Cook thoroughly before eating.
