Begonia Black Velvet is a stunning hybrid begonia celebrated for its dramatic, maple-shaped leaves in deep, rich near-black tones with a distinctively soft, velvety texture. Compact mounding plants grow 6–12" tall and wide, producing delicate sprays of soft pink flowers in spring when given bright light — a beautiful contrast against the dark foliage. Evergreen year-round as a houseplant, with a lush tropical character that elevates any indoor plant collection. Ships as 3 live plants. Perennial outdoors in Zones 10–11.

Why Grow Begonia Black Velvet?

  • Dramatic foliage — deep, near-black maple-shaped leaves with a rich velvety texture unlike any other begonia
  • Compact habit — 6–12" mounding form, perfect for shelves, windowsills, and tabletops
  • Spring blooms — soft pink flower sprays emerge in spring with adequate bright light
  • Evergreen year-round — foliage holds beautifully indoors through all seasons
  • Tropical houseplant character — brings a bold, collector-worthy presence to any indoor space
  • Low maintenance — tolerant and easy to care for once established in the right conditions

Care Guide

  • Light: Bright indirect light — avoid direct sun, which can scorch the delicate foliage. East or north-facing windows work well; supplement with grow lights if needed.
  • Water: Allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings. Begonias prefer moist but never soggy soil — overwatering is the most common cause of decline. Water less in winter.
  • Humidity: Prefers moderate to higher humidity. Mist lightly or place near a pebble tray with water. Avoid cold drafts and heating vents.
  • Temperature: Prefers moderate, consistent temperatures — 65–75°F ideal. Keep away from cold windowpanes in winter.
  • Soil: Well-draining potting mix with good aeration. A mix of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark works well.
  • Fertilizer: Feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength during spring and summer. Withhold in winter.
  • Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years when roots begin to crowd the pot. Slightly snug roots encourage blooming.

Outdoor Growing

  • Perennial in USDA Zones 10–11; treat as an annual or bring indoors before frost in cooler zones.
  • Outdoors, site in dappled shade or bright indirect light — protected from afternoon sun and heavy rain.
