Colocasia — Elephant Ear — delivers an unmistakable bold tropical effect in any landscape with its massive, dramatic leaves reminiscent of elephant ears. Size 9/11 tubers are a great choice for containers, mixed tropical borders, edging around ponds, and walkway accents. Available in a variety of colors; commonly grown for lush, tropical-looking foliage that instantly transforms any space. Tender perennial — must be lifted and stored in cold climates.

Plant Highlights

  • Large, bold tropical foliage in a range of colors — immediately impactful in garden or container
  • Versatile use: focal point, background, ground cover, edging, container, pondside planting
  • Size 9/11 tubers — ideal for pots, containers, and smaller garden spaces
  • Grows in full sun to partial shade; prefers rich, moist soil
  • Tender perennial — lift and store in zones with hard winters

Planting Guide

Outdoor planting: Plant tubers directly outdoors once all threat of frost or freezing temperatures has passed. Plant 2–3 inches deep, blunt end down. Choose a site with rich, moist soil — full sun to partial shade. Partial shade generally preferred; full sun tolerated.

Indoor head start: Plant indoors approximately 8 weeks before the last frost date in rich, organic potting soil at the same depth. Harden off plants for about 1 week before moving outdoors.

Care Guide

Watering: Water regularly during dry spells, especially container-grown plants. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

Fertilizing: Apply a slow-release fertilizer periodically for lush, vigorous growth — beneficial but not strictly required.

Winter storage (cold climates): Freezing temperatures damage tubers and kill foliage. After the first frost, cut foliage back to a few inches and carefully dig up the tubers. Allow to dry for 1–2 days, then store in peat moss or wood shavings in a cool, dark location — such as a basement or garage — until spring.
