Lilium philippinense โ€” the Philippine Lily, also known as the Benguet Lily โ€” is one of the most exquisite and underused tropical lily species available to home growers. Native to the high-altitude mountains of northern Luzon (Philippines) and Taiwan, it produces large, elegant trumpet-shaped flowers of pure white with a subtle greenish tinge on the exterior, rising from graceful 2โ€“3 foot stems. The fragrance is deeply sweet and intensely tropical โ€” particularly pronounced on warm evenings. Unlike many lilies that favor temperate climates, this species is tailor-made for subtropical and warm-climate gardens.

10 seeds per packet.

Why Philippine Lily

  • Large, elegant white trumpet flowers; 6โ€“8 inches long
  • Intensely sweet evening fragrance โ€” one of the most fragrant lilies available
  • Ideal for subtropical and tropical gardens (USDA Zones 8โ€“11)
  • Excellent cut flower with strong stems and long vase life
  • Native to mountain regions of northern Philippines and Taiwan
  • Blooms in summer; grows 2โ€“3 feet tall

Germination Guide

  1. Cold stratification: Mix seeds with moist vermiculite or peat in a sealed plastic bag; refrigerate at 35โ€“40ยฐF for 30โ€“60 days to improve germination rates.
  2. Sowing: After stratification, surface-sow on well-draining seed-starting mix. Press seeds lightly onto the surface โ€” do not cover; lily seeds need light to germinate.
  3. Temperature: Maintain soil at 70โ€“75ยฐF; use a heat mat for consistent warmth.
  4. Moisture: Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Mist regularly to maintain humidity around seeds.
  5. Germination time: Typically 3โ€“6 weeks after stratification. Some seeds may take longer โ€” be patient; do not discard pots prematurely.
  6. Transplanting: Once seedlings have 2โ€“3 true leaves, transplant carefully to individual pots. Handle gently โ€” lily seedlings are delicate at this stage.
  7. Growing on: Grow seedlings in pots for at least one full season before planting outdoors. Provide bright indirect light and consistent moisture. Expect 2โ€“3 years from seed to first bloom.
