How To grow pigeon peas ,  plant the seeds directly in the ground after the last frost, placing them 3/4 to 1 inch deep and 3-4 inches apart in well-drained soil with full sun exposure. Make sure the soil temperature is warm and thin out seedlings to a distance of 1 foot apart once they are established. Pigeon peas are a long-season crop and typically take 120-140 days to mature and produce pods. In colder climates, consider starting the seeds indoors to prolong the growing season.
