About Yellow Devil's Tongue
The Devil's Tongue pepper has uncertain origins but unmistakable character — its exact lineage is unknown, though its heat level, flavor, and pod structure place it squarely in the habanero family. Pods measure 2" long x 1.25" wide with intensely wrinkled skin, ripening from green through yellow to a deep golden-yellow at full maturity. Plants produce good yields on sturdy stems with light green foliage and white flowers. A prized collector's variety with deep Pennsylvania roots and exceptional culinary heat.
Culinary Uses
- Blend into fruity superhot hot sauces and habanero-style salsas

Wear gloves when handling. Wash hands thoroughly after removing gloves. Keep away from eyes and sensitive areas. Lime juice can help relieve skin burn.
Growing Tips
- Start indoors 10–12 weeks before last frost. Sow seeds 1/4" deep in warm, moist organic seed-starting mix.
- Germination takes 1–4 weeks. Use a heat mat (80–85F) — consistent warmth is essential for Capsicum chinense.
- Soak seeds in room-temperature water for up to 24 hours before planting to speed germination.
- Avoid peat plugs and standard potting soil — organic seed-starting mix prevents damping off.
- Harden off gradually before transplanting outdoors. Move outside once nighttime temps stay above 55F.
- Container friendly — grows well in 5-gallon pots for patios or year-round indoor production.
Care Requirements
- Soil: Fertile, well-drained. Amend planting hole with compost; mulch 1–2" around the base.
- Water: 1" per week; consistent deep watering. Soaker hoses work well.
- Fertilizer: Compost tea every 2–3 weeks for first 6 weeks; liquid feed every two weeks through the season.
- Harvest: Cut with garden scissors when pods reach full golden-yellow. Pick regularly to encourage continued fruiting.
