Taiwan’s Beloved Giant White Radish — Impressively Large, Remarkably Sweet
Giant Luo Buo is a standout cool-season radish celebrated across Taiwan and Chinese culinary tradition for its impressive size and exceptionally sweet, mild flavor. Each oval white root grows 8–10" long and 5–6" in diameter, weighing 2–2.5 lbs at maturity — making it one of the largest and most dramatic radish varieties available. Its sweet, tender flesh holds up beautifully across a wide range of preparations: raw and sliced, pickled, braised in soups, or slow-simmered in savory stews. Far milder than smaller Western radishes and nearly free of pungency.
Highlights
- Large oval white roots: 8–10" long × 5–6" diameter; 2–2.5 lbs each
- Sweet, mild, tender flesh — minimal pungency
- Cool season annual; popular in Taiwan and Chinese cuisine
- Excellent fresh, pickled, braised, and in soups
In the Kitchen
Slice raw for fresh salads or as a crudité. Cube and slow-simmer in Taiwanese braised pork (lu rou fan) broth or Japanese oden. Grate and pickle in brine or rice vinegar for a crisp condiment. Radish cake (lo bak go) is another classic preparation. Stems and leaves are also edible — stir-fry or add to soups.
Growing Guide
- Sow: Late summer to early fall for a cool-season harvest
- Location: Full sun; fertile, well-drained, deeply worked soil (deep enough for large roots to form straight)
- Moisture: Keep soil consistently moist; fertilize as needed
- Harvest: When roots reach desired size — best when young and still sweet; large roots store well in cool conditions
