The Antigonon leptopus ( an-TIG-oh-non LEP-toh-puss) inspires local names everywhere it grows: Tallahassee Vine, Honolulu Creeper, the Christmas Island Crawler, as well as Confederate Vine, Mexican Coral Vine, Mexican Creeper, Chinese Love Vine, Chain of Love, Queenâs Jewels, Desert Bleeding Heart, and Queenâs Wreath. Other names include: Kadena de Amor, Flor de San Diego, Rosa de Mayo, Corona de Reina, Hierba de Santa Rosa, San Miguelito, and Fulmina. Natives called it Coamecate, Coamecatl, Chak lol makal, Cuamécatl, Gui-bakushu, Mamasa-sai and Tunuc. Itâs also called the Rose of Montana, but does not grow there.
A fast-growing climber, the Coral Vine grabs via tendrils and can reach 40 feet in length in old age. Its leaves are heart shaped, sometimes triangular, crinkly edged, with reticulated veins (looks wrinkled.) They are officially around one three inches long though I think they grow larger. The flowers are arranged in panicles, pink to white, blooming from spring to fall, many times year around. It is an evergreen in some climates or looses its leaves for a little while in other areas.
HOW TO GROW
This beautiful flowering climber may be grown as a hanging basket and is also used as a trellis. It produces racemes of bright pink flowers. Underground tubers are edible. Requires constant warmth and full sun.

Select a location for your coral vine plant where it will receive partial sun. Loosen the soil slightly. Alternatively, prepare a pot with a well-draining soil mix if you wish to start the seeds indoors.

Water the soil in your chosen location or container so it is moist but not saturated. If the soil becomes easily saturated, add perlite, sand or organic material to the soil to assist with drainage while allowing the soil itself to stay moist.

Place the coral vine seeds in the moistened soil so they are barely covered by the soil. Planting the seeds too deep may prevent the coral vine plant from developing.

Keep the soil moist during the germination period, checking it every day and watering as necessary. It takes coral vine between 21 and 30 days to germinate and emerge from the soil.

Fertilize the coral vine plant weekly during the growing season using a general-purpose fertilizer for flowering plants. Check the soil for moisture every few days; once the plant is established it is more tolerant of dry conditions than during the germination period.

Control the coral vine's growth by setting up a trellis or other frame for it to climb. Coral vine climbs using tendrils and can grow aggressively to lengths of 30 feet or more if given the opportunity.
