The Serviceberry is self-pollinating, with white and light pink flowers in early spring followed by purplish red berries in summer.
Best in shrub borders, woodland gardens or naturalized areas, especially with dark or shaded backdrops which tend to highlight the form, flowers and fall color of the plant. Also effective along stream banks and ponds.
It is not a true blueberry but tastes like one. The tiny edible fruit is popular with birds, including American Goldfinch, tufted titmice, brown thrashers, blue jays, Carolina chickadees, northern cardinals and American robins. Serviceberries taste the way they look: like red blueberries. They can be used in jellies, cobblers, pies, muffins, coffee cakes or as dessert toppings. Genus name comes from a French provincial name for Amelanchier ovalis a European plant in this genus.
Specific epithet means leaves like the genus Alnus in reference to the similarity of the leaves of this species to common alder (Alnus glutinosa).
Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Tolerant of a somewhat wide range of soils. Root suckers are common, and if not removed, will result in a shrubby growth habit for the plant.
