They enhance the appearance of green roofs, vertical walls and rockeries due to differing leaf forms, flower colours and extended flowering period. If started early, they will form a dense ground cover in the very first season and if the weather is favourable, will flower within six
months.
Seldom seen, this Stonecrop species is native to the Southeastern USA. It forms a low carpet of thick, succulent silvery-grey leaves that become burnished with bronze during the summer. Small clusters of starry white flowers appear in early summer. Excellent for hot, sunny locations. Perfect for the rock garden, wall, alpine containers or edging a pathway. Easily divided in spring. Plants remain evergreen in mild winter regions. Prune back to 2 inches in spring, if desired. Possibly hardy to Zone 4 or colder. Introduced by international breeder Syngenta Flowers.
Sedum Glaucophyllum Silver Frost
Sedum (Sedum Glaucophyllum) - Here is yet another low-growing ground cover plant that is excellent for many different landscape applications. Easily established from Sedum Glaucophyllum seeds, this perennial is commonly called Cliff Stonecrop. The Cliff Stonecrop plant is native to the southern Appalachians where it grows on lightly shaded limestone outcrops where it is regularly damp but very well-drained. The attractive succulent foliage forms rosettes of tiny, blue-green leaves. It blooms in late spring and 4 inch stems hold clusters of small white flowers.
These Sedum ground cover plants grow in a prostrate, mat-forming manner and are an evergreen. Sedum Stonecrop will spread 12 - 16 inches in diameter. The alpine selections of Stonecrop are excellent for edging or rock garden plants, particularly for hot, dry sites with poor soil.
Sedum has tiny seeds which should be mixed with fine sand for an even sowing. Sow Sedum ground cover seeds indoors 6 - 8 weeks before the last frost is expected. Use small pots or flats and sterile starter mix. Pre-moisten the starter mix and sow Sedum seeds on the surface. Press the seed into the moistened soil, and do not cover it. Keep the seeds moist but not saturated until they germinate. Water from the underside of the pots or use a spray bottle and lightly mist the seeds.
