For those in the far north with a short growing season, ONION SETS MIXED COLOR (bulbs) are a reliable method of producing bulb onions. These long-day onions can be grown quickly in gardens with a longer growing season, but be sure to wait to plant them to avoid bolting. Our open pollinated selection yields slightly flattened bulbs, best enjoyed fresh or processed promptly. Certified free of white rot and stem nematode. Each pound includes approximately 100 - 130 sets
Onion sets are biennial plants with hollow, glaucous leaves. They are typically bluish green and have a medium growth rate.
onion sets, which are dormant bulbs, into the ground at a depth of 1-2 inches. Space the sets 2-3 inches apart, and once they begin to grow, thin them to 3-4 inches apart. The thinned plants can be used as green onions. For optimal growth, onions require rich organic soil, so incorporate 2-4 inches of compost or humus before planting. Space onion plants 4-6 inches apart.
Onions are great companion plants in the garden. They naturally deter certain garden pests, like aphids, Japanese beetles, sugar beet-flea beetles, deer, and rabbits. Onions can also improve the flavor of some of their companions, while some companions, like chamomile and summer savory, can improve the onion?s flavor. Scattering them around the vegetable garden helps to produce healthier harvests.
