White Marseilles’ Fig tree was one of his favorites and he is quoted as saying “it is unquestionably superior to any fig I have ever seen.” Originally from southern France, ‘White Marseilles’ is a mid-season fig plant that produces its crop towards the end of July. The short-necked, delicately sweet fruit is greenish-yellow with a pale yellow inner flesh. Hardy in zones 6-9, ‘White Marseilles’ is an excellent fig for northern gardeners.
Figs are incredibly healthy; they are free of fat and cholesterol. They have the highest content of minerals and have more fiber than any other fruit.

Fresh figs in the North, grown in your own apartment, by late summer! Is it possible? We also recommend it for container gardening, making it a great choice for apartment dwellers. While it thrives outdoors, this fig tree will even succeed potted if brought inside during the colder season.

It is similar to the brown turkey fig and is hardy to at least USDA climate zone 5, where winter temperatures can drop to below zero degrees F. The ‘Chicago’ hardy fig is a hybrid variety that has been developed in recent years. This variety can die back to the ground in winter and should be protected with mulch.
