Abutilon 'CHINESE Lantern' is an evergreen perennial shrub boasting an abundance of beautiful, hanging, orange-red flowers. This easy-to-grow plant is sure to add color, texture, and interest to any garden. A perfect choice for winter landscapes, it offers year-round color and blooms in the spring and summer.
This plant has a compact, rounded habit of 12" tall and wide, offering yellow bell-shaped flowers from summer until frost. Perennial and evergreen in zone 8-11, Lucky Lantern will bloom nearly year-round in warm climates. This plant flourishes in full sun, attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds to landscape borders, front porch baskets, or patio containers.
Outdoors, grow the shrubs in full sun to partial shade. Northern gardeners may wish to grow these sub-tropical specimens in containers so that it is easier to bring them indoors in the fall, where they will be grown as houseplants during the winter. Grow them in a well-drained soil that has been enriched with compost. Abutilon plants have average water needs. In zones 9-10, optimal lighting is for the plants to receive full sun in the morning but some shade in the hot afternoon. Rather than performing outright pruning, the recommended way to keep the plants compact is to pinch the tips of the branches of the bushes while they are young.
