Decaisnea Fargesii - Blue Sausage Fruit
The strange blue sausage fruits bears 3-5", slender fruits that look much like its name suggests. Fruits are edible, with a somewhat sweet flavor, through are not cultivated. Popular as an ornamental or conversation piece. Deciduous, grows to 10-15 feet. Hardy to 0F and a bit lower.
Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Intolerant of drought and hot summer climates. Keep soils consistently moist. Best sited in locations protected from cold winds (particularly in spring). Winter hardy to USDA Zone 6 or 7, but may be grown further north into USDA Zone 5 where it may die to the ground in winter with roots surviving to produce new growth in spring.
Growing Info:
Scarification: Soak in hot tap water.
Stratification: cold stratify for 90 days.
Germination: sow seed 3/8" deep, tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed.
