Planting Tulip Bulbs - How to Plant Tulip Bulbs
Plant Tulip Bulbs for Spring Color: October-December is ideal planting time, but they can also be planted until Christmas and still bloom in spring with a short growth season.
Where to Plant Your Tulip Bulbs:
For optimal growth, plant Tulips in full sun in well-drained soil. Avoid planting in wet areas. Tulips can also thrive in a variety of soil types, but if the soil is dry, wait to plant the bulbs until after a rain.
How to Plant Your Tulip Bulbs:
Prepare the site by clearing weeds and using a fork or trowel to aerate the soil. Dig a hole twice the length of the bulb and plant it with the pointed end facing up. For large amounts, dig a larger bed.
In warmer climates plant bulbs deeper than 10 inches; the deeper you plant a tulip, the tougher it will be. Tulips planted deeper have thicker stems and fall over less often.
When planting tulips, it is nice to place them close to one another to avoid having them standing by themselves in the spring. This is one flower that always looks better in groups. You can place bulbs as close as six inches away from each other in the ground.
A great tip is to alternate rows of early, mid and late blooming tulips so you may enjoy tulips throughout the entire season!
Tulip as perennial:
Expert Tip: To ensure long-lasting blooms, plant your Blue Beauty Tulip bulbs deep (8-10 inches) as they originate from Central Asia and prefer specific growing conditions not often found in American gardens.
Improve bulb growth and flowering by fertilizing in spring and removing spent flowers. Use organic fertilizer and snap off flower stems to prioritize bulb growth over seed production.
Tulips need dry dormancy and can be perennials. Use Darwin Hybrid Tulips for reliable, colorful blooms for years. Wait for foliage to wither before removing and avoid summer watering.
