Candy Lily mix - yellow to orange, red to pink, and lavender to purple
Plant Description
Life Cycle: Perennial
Family: Iridaceae
Origin: Cross
Special Features: Impressive compact variety featuring abundantly branching flower stems and a stunning variety of solid and patterned blooms.
Historical: Introduced in 1998, Pardancanda norrisii is a dwarf seed strain resulting from a cross between Belamcanda chinensis and Pardanthopsis dichotoma. This hardy perennial is perfect for zones 5-9, and will add flair to any landscape.
1 Fill a seed flat with well-draining potting soil. Alternatively, work the garden 4 to 6 inches deep and incorporate 2 inches of compost or another type of organic matter. Test the acidic level using a home testing kit, available at most garden centers. If necessary, incorporate crushed limestone or sulfur to adjust the pH level so it is between 5.8 and 6.8, which is ideal for growing candy lilies. How much limestone or sulfur depends on how much you need to raise or lower the pH. Grow candy lilies in partial to full sun.
2 Sow two to three seeds per cell in the seed tray about four to six weeks before the last spring frost. Outdoors, sow seeds after the last spring frost, planting them about 3 to 4 inches apart. You will thin the seedlings so one candy lily plant grows every 12 inches.
3 Cover the seeds with 1/4 inch of soil and water so the soil is moist. Maintain moist soil conditions for best results.
4 Move the seed flat to a well-lit area that is approximately 68 degrees Fahrenheit, such as near a sunny, south-facing window. Expect seeds to germinate in four to eight weeks. The seedlings will then be ready to transplant outdoors or into a larger pot in another four to six weeks after the seedlings form at least two sets of leaves.
