Great For Fence, wall or Back border- Very Tall
An unusual color for Hollyhocks, the beautiful, 5 inch double blooms are a mix of pale rose and tan. Hardy to zone 4, Chamois Rose grows to 6 feet in full sun to part shade.
In midsummer, tall, strong stalks are packed with lots of large, fully double, peach-colored blossoms which are sometimes tinged with raspberry-pink. They open from the bottom of the stalk up over a long period. The leaves are deeply lobed in classic alcea form.
Feel free to grow hollyhocks under Black Walnut trees; they are tolerant of the toxic juglone that is emitted through the trees' roots. Hollyhocks are best treated as a biennial or short-lived perennial.
Sow on to a moist seed sowing compost in a 144 cell plug tray or slightly larger unit if preferred. Cover well with 5mm of vermiculite and propagate at 18 to 20 C germination should take place after 7 to 10 days. Plug sowing is by far the best option, as Hollyhock does not like the root disturbance of pricking out and can be susceptible to damping off.
Grow on the seedlings in a lightly shaded area until they are established and fill the tray. Pot on in late August - September in to 1 litre pots or put 3 plugs in to 2 or 3 litre pots. Over winter in a well ventilated unheated glasshouse or tunnel for sales the following March / April or for flowering plants ready to sell in early May to June.
